Title: Uptake of FDG in Venous Thromboembolism: A Potentially Advantageous Application for FDG-PET

Abstract: Venous thromboembolism, which encompasses deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Its diagnosis is limited by presenting clinical signs and symptoms, as well as compression ultrasound, which has difficulty evaluating central venous structures. Several anecdotal reports have demonstrated increased FDG uptake in central deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in patients who underwent FDG-PET scanning for other purposes, however very little is understood about the mechanisms of FDG uptake in thrombosis. Research into the mechanism of FDG uptake and planned clinical research will be presented.
